Cast Iron Radiators

Cast iron radiators are becoming more and more popular for the modern interior as well as the traditional look that they are more synonymous with. They are perfect for new builds, barn and warehouse conversions as well as the period home.

Most cast iron radiators can be built to any specification, which means they can fit seamlessly into any environment. The options available include two, three, four, five and six columns and almost any colour and finish desired including patterned. Cast iron radiators can traditionally be bought by the section allowing the radiator to be the perfect length to fit into any required space.

A tall slim traditional elegance emanates from the 2 column cast iron radiator, which has the versatility of being available in different heights, perfect for any desired location in the room of your choice.

In contrast the 6 column cast iron radiator tends to be constructed a lot deeper and substantially shorter to form more of a box formation. This is often the cast iron radiator of choice if height is the most important factor. The six column cast iron radiator’s versatility is continued with a possible dual purpose. If used in a bathroom a short six column cast iron radiator with a small shelf above it, can be used to store and warm towels.

As a general rule of thumb the more columns the radiator has the shorter they tend to be. For example the five column cast iron radiator is generally only 300mm high and is great for minimum space and maximum output, ideal for circulating heat underneath windows.

Colour Options Available

Cast iron radiators are available in a wide variety of colours from dark olive brown to pigeon blue. Even within one colour there are many shades available such as traffic white, warm white, cream white and grey white.

Whilst most cast iron radiators have a smooth finish a patterned finish is available on most models. This tends to be a very elaborate design and has a textured raised feel to it, rather than just a 2d flat painted design.

Fitting a Cast Iron Radiator

Cast iron radiators can be fitted to new and existing heating systems. However before installing the radiator a good idea is to make sure it is tested in the UK for efficiency and quality and that it carries the BS EN 442 British Standard Test Assurance. Another sign of quality assurance is if the radiators have been manufactured in an ISO 9002 certified factory. Make sure the cast iron radiator has an adjustable temperature setting that includes a frost protection option; this will help prevent leakages in extreme weather.

Plumbcall Direct thoroughly pressure test every cast iron radiator with a genuine hydraulic pressure test to a mains water pressure of at least 4 to 5 bar. This has a guarantee against leaking, which is an important factor especially when buying a reconditioned cast iron radiator.

Plumbcall direct will thoroughly flush the cast iron radiator before installation to get rid of any sediment as any left over sediment could void a manufacturers warranty on a newly installed boiler.

Cast iron radiators generally need a 15mm thermostatic valve that prevents overheating and is available in angled or straight designs in the following sizes - ½ inch, ¾ and 1 inch connections. The perfect choice of radiator valve for a cast iron radiator is perhaps a Georgian solid brass valve that elegantly compliments the radiator.

On cast iron radiators the sectional column concept gives you the convenience and complete flexibility so that all available models can be assembled to meet your individual requirements. Whatever your needs Plumbcall direct will have a cast iron radiator that is ideal for all rooms whether it be contemporary or period properties, or for new or existing heating systems.

Tip: Always make sure that your cast iron radiators are mounted securely either on the wall or on the feet, which can also be supplied by Plumbcall Direct. These radiators are very heavy and could be potentially dangerous if not secured properly and if you are not confident with DIY, always consult a professional. N.B. Be careful whilst lifting cast iron radiators and always have help at hand when trying to move these radiators into situ.
